Dear Stan Dixon,
I am very concerned that the SCRD does not have a size limit on
retail/commercial/wholesale buildings. I would like to see the size of
new developments capped at 25,000 square feet total floor space per
business.
Some of the negative impacts that big box stores have on communities are:
- increased traffic
- environmental degradation
- ugly sprawl (one big box attracts others)
- a poorer local economy (money spent at big chains leaves our community)
Finally, tourism is an important part of our local economy, and tourists
don't come to the Sunshine Coast to see a 700 car parking lot--they come
for our magnificent scenery and semi-rural lifestyle.
I am not against all development but I do think that every community has
the right to decide what type of development will take place. I would
like to see the Sunshine Coast maintain its semi-rural, diverse character
and therefore I ask that you act now to limit the size of new commercial
development before our beautiful community starts looking like just
another suburb of Vancouver.
Sincerely,
|
